Books I Read in May

by - 09:02

This a new style of post I've decided to do whereby I talk about the books I have been reading over the last month. I hope you enjoy it and maybe you'll find some new reads to enjoy for yourself!

The Girls Who Went to War
Duncan Barrett and Nuala Calvi

This was a really different read for me because, believe it or not, I haven't read many true-to-life historical novels. In The Girls Who Went to War, Barrett and Calvi retell the stories of three young girls working in the women's forces of World War Two. Each of the girls has their own tale of high moments and heartbreak and it is truly inspiring learning about what these women did for us on our own soil and beyond.

I started off not really knowing much about the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the Women's Auxiliary Air Force and the Women's Royal Naval Service but I learned so much from this book without feeling like I was being drilled into with constant facts and information. It was the heartfelt and emotional element I loved so much about reading The Girls Who Went to War and I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in finding out more about how women played a role the war.

A Seaside Affair
Fern Britton

Moving away from the 1940s and back to the modern day, I've just finished A Seaside Affair and the Daily Mail weren't wrong when they suggested this book 'will make you yearn for a staycation in the West Country'.

I've always had a soft spot for the West and the same can certainly be said of Fern Britton who I found writes in such a passionate and descriptive manner. I fell head over heels in love with the sweet Cornish town of Trevay and buried myself deep into the story, feeling angry when her characters were frustrated or upset, and triumphant for each of their successes as they try to rectify the archaic Pavilions to save it from being taken over by a large chain of coffee shop.

A Seaside Affair was a joy to read and I can't wait to read more of Fern's novels!

Thank you for reading this new kind of post, I hope you liked it!

I'm currently reading Penny Vincenzi's Something Dangerous, so hopefully I'll be able to feature that in a Books I Read in June?!

Enjoy the rest of your week!
