'You're The One That I Want'; Giovanna Fletcher
There I was, shopping in W H Smith's, with the sudden urge to start reading again. I'm afraid studying English literature at school rather took the enjoyment out of 'reading in my own time', but as university is just round the corner I figured it would be nice to have something to escape to when I'm by myself.
I picked up 'You're The One That I Want' after being tempted by hearing about Giovanna's lovely writing style - not to mention the gorgeous front cover!
I read it in two days.
You know those kinds of books you just can't bear to put down? Yes, it was that kind of book. I was absolutely gripped from the very start, with the same question constantly whizzing round in my head: who was Maddy going to pick?! Argh! The frustration of not knowing was killing me! I had to keep reading.
The novel is about three best friends, Maddy, Robert and Ben, who are simply inseparable from the day they meet in primary school. But, as the three of them grow, love becomes a more significant theme in their lives - and three's a crowd, right?! It leaves Maddy with a crucial decision. Who does she choose?
I want to applaud Giovanna's ability to make me become so attached to the characters. I felt like they were so real and relatable, because each emotion they felt made me want to laugh and cry along with them.
I think what I enjoyed most about reading this book was that overall it gave a realistic approach to love - the brutal, unrequited side - whilst also proving that having a 'one and only' is not necessarily always the case.
I also picked up 'Billy and Me' at the same time...but I'm going to wait for university to read that!
I'm leaving a link to Giovanna's website for you all to check out if you think she's your cup of coffee! ;-)
